The story of Arch Rock began millions of years ago, as Michigan's limestone bedrock slowly formed. After the last ice age, glacial lakes sculpted Mackinac Island's limestone breccia, forming arches, caves, and other structures. Natural forces continue to shape these ever-changing geological formations.

Mackinac Island's natural attractions have drawn curious visitors for centuries, leading to generations of scientific discovery and artistic expression. Since 1895, these specimens of "nature's handiwork in sculpture" have been preserved and protected by the Mackinac Island State Park Commission for the enjoyment of future generations.
